Jamaican bred and Cleveland raised, Ricolette Simmonds is a fast emerging young vocalist who is creating a sizable buzz both at home and on the international circuit. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, the 22–year-old left the island at an early age to expand her horizons in the U.S. The backdrop of Cleveland’s vibrant arts scene blended with her rootsy Jamaican upbringing formed Ricki’s character early on, instilling a cool balance of metropolitan sophistication with a grounded island attitude.
The self-described ‘soul rebel’ brings a style that is anchored in R&B but expands impressively into her own very emotive ‘new soul’ sound. Lyrically, she meditates on love’s euphoria, the legalization of herb, and her bittersweet push-and-pull romance with her Jamaican roots. Her vocals hypnotize while her lyrics dig deep into cultural minefields such as channeling girlpower, black consciousness, and the grittier shades of love. On a closer listen, her vocals have faint traces of Erykah Badu, The Weeknd, and even the greats like Billie Holiday. Ricki’s presence carries a unique magnetism that spells edgy global pop star in the making.
Be sure to check out Salience, her first full-length, 11-track project. This is glorious stuff.
